ACNE SCAR TREATMENTS

Acne is a common inflammatory condition that causes blocked pores, pimples and cysts most commonly affecting the face, chest, back and shoulders. Westville Dermatology offers the best acne scar treatment in Westerville Ohio!

Acne scarring often occurs from painful cystic lesions or deeper red pimples particularly the face and back. Picking the acne lesions deepens and prolongs the redness and often worsens acne scars.

The most common acne scars include:

  • Rolling scars-are shallow with smooth, rounded edges spread over large areas on the cheeks. They are the easiest to treat.
  • Boxcar scars-are round depressions superficial or deep and usually found on the temples.
  • Icepick scars-are deepest and usually the most difficult to treat. Combination treatments greatly reduces their appearance.

Acne Scar Treatment Options

The best way to change the appearance of acne scars on a permanent basis is to stimulate more collagen to develop and/or flatten the skin surface of a depressed boxcar or rolling scar.

While fractionated ablative lasers such as a carbon dioxide laser usually gives best results because they remove the scar tissue as well as create new collagen, other energy based devices and several minimally-invasive treatments are available.

Depending on your needs and goals, Drs. Lin, Karikomi and Grosshandler may recommend one or more acne scar treatments including:

Ultrapulse CO2 laser

Ablative lasers, treatments, video and download patient brochure-this provides the best treatment for boxcar and rolling scars. There is downtime up to a week and may require a series of two or three treatments for best outcomes.

Subcision

A surgical procedure using a specific type of needle inserted through the skin that lyse or break up fibrous scarring. This allows the skin to elevate. This is especially useful in tethered or bound down scars. This technique is often combined with CO2 laser treatments or Infini RF for optimal scar revision.

Infini RF

This device delivers heat in precise depths of the skin to create collagen in 3 dimensional configuration for all skin types and tightens laxity in the face. There is minimal downtime and series of 3-5 treatments often are required for best results. It may be beneficial to even combine Infini RF with CO2 laser treatments for selected individual patients.

Soft tissue fillers

Several of these collagen stimulatory fillers lift and/or fill boxcar or rolling scars but are temporary lasting from months to up to two years. If acne scars occur in areas of volume loss such as the cheeks, soft tissue correction enhances CO2 laser or Infini RF. While all soft tissue fillers stimulate collagen formation, Sculptra and Radiesse stimulate the most collagen and last the longest.

The most effective way to prevent acne scarring is effective acne treatment to inhibit or stop the acne lesions from developing. Our board certified dermatologists provide a variety of treatment options to effectively treat your acne condition. Keep in mind, sun protection is always important to hyperpigmentation especially if you have darker skin.
