Top Remedies for Eliminating Sunspots

Sunspots are dark parts of the skin that are caused by excessive exposure to UVA and UVB rays. While people with lighter skin tend to get sunspots more frequently, they can develop on anyone. Sunspots can develop in a variety of shapes and colors and can appear anywhere on your skin, though it’s most common to see them on the face and hands.

There are a variety of foods that can help diminish the appearance of sunspots, including:

  • Citrus. Orange and tomatoes are packed with vitamin C that is effective in repairing damaged tissues and skin cells while helping to protect against the sun’s harmful rays. Also, grapes, tomatoes, and watermelon contain lycopene that helps your skin from burning. Just keep in mind that these foods alone will not combat sunburn; sunscreen of at least SPF 30 should also be worn when spending prolonged amounts of time in the sun.
  • Green tea. High in antioxidants, green tea can help maintain the quality of your skin and slow the effects of aging.
  • Tuna. This food is chock full of omega-3 fatty acids that can help prevent sun spots and help the body repair damaged skin.
  • Green, leafy veggies. Eating green vegetables like broccoli, spinach, kale and collard greens can add a significant dose of vitamins B and E to your diet, as well as a good amount of fiber to contribute to healthy skin.

There are also some professional treatments that can get rid of sunspots, including:

  • Chemical peel. Performed at both spas or in a dermatologist’s office, a chemical peel is a process of applying a combination of acids to the targeted area (typically your face, in this case) to get rid of damaged layers of your skin. You may experience redness after this procedure, which will diminish after several days.
  • Laser skin resurfacing. This procedure uses a laser to remove the surface layers of the damaged skin, promoting the growth of healthier skin where the damaged skin once was.
  • Cryotherapy. This treatment involves applying liquid nitrogen to the damaged parts of your skin, which causes it to scab. These scabs will then fall off in about a week’s time and leave a clear spot in its place.
