The Top 4 Common Skin Conditions in Children

Caring for your skin at an early age can set the stage for healthy skin throughout your lifetime. Children and adults can experience the same skin conditions, but in younger people, some skin conditions are more prevalent and require special attention and care. The following skin conditions are the most common in children.

Acne
Most common in teenagers, acne can result from hormones, family history, stress, cosmetics, and bacteria. It occurs when there is an abnormality in the oil glands that cause reproduction of skin cells, leading to pimples on the skin’s surface. Treatment for children with non-scarring acne includes over-the-counter medications that contain benzoyl peroxide. If there are deeper lesions on the skin that cause scarring, it’s a good idea to see your dermatologist to explore a prescription medication that may be more efficient.

Rash
Inflammation and redness on the face can be caused by many factors including certain soaps or cosmetics, poison ivy, or exposure to certain chemicals. Treatments typically involve avoiding the element that seems to trigger the rash and bathing in warm water. If the rash is more severe, prescription medications may be necessary.

Eczema
Eczema (or atopic dermatitis) is a group of medical conditions that cause the skin to become inflamed or irritated. Most patients experience an itchy rash on the arms, legs, forehead or cheeks brought on by being exposed to certain soaps, food allergies and even clothes made out of certain materials. Symptoms can be relieved by applying a cold compress, taking antihistamines or using topical steroids.

Birthmarks
Birthmarks get their name because they develop on the skin of newborn babies either before being born or soon after. These benign, colored patches of skin can be tan, red, pink or purple. If a birthmark is bothersome due to its size or location, removal techniques are available.
