New to Dermal Fillers? Get the Details Here!

Dermatologist injecting a patient with dermal fillers

Injectable wrinkle-reducing treatments have been around for quite some time. That doesn’t mean that everyone knows everything there is to know about this anti-aging method. If you are new to dermal fillers, you cannot be expected to know exactly which product should be used to achieve your desired result. That is our job.  During your consultation in our Westerville dermatology office, we assess your needs first and then devise a treatment to include the right products for the right use – because there’s more to the magic than simply filling a line.

How Fillers Work

Because “dermal fillers” is a universal term, there can be a perception that every product works in the same way. That’s not the case. There are natural filler products, and there are fillers that are made with the synthetic product.

JUVÉDERM is an example of a natural dermal filler. This product, as well as Restylane, is composed of hyaluronic acid in a gel base. The finer points of various hyaluronic acid fillers may differ from one product to another, but the mechanism of action is the same. Hyaluronic acid, a sugar compound, tethers to water. More specifically, it attaches to several times its own weight in water, which adds volume beneath the skin, thus smoothing lines.

Radiesse is an example of a synthetic dermal filler, as is Sculptra. These fillers introduce tiny particles of calcium hydroxylapatite or poly-L-lactic acid, respectively, into the connective tissue beneath the epidermis. The initial addition of volume comes from the bulk of these finite particles. Over time, as absorption takes place, new collagen fibers pick up the slack as a refreshed foundation for youthful looking skin.

What Dermal Fillers Can Do

Dermal filler treatment is effective for facial rejuvenation, achieving goals such as:

  • Disguising under eye bags
  • Filling out hollow cheeks or temples
  • Adding contour to the cheeks
  • Smoothing lines around the nose and mouth
  • Plumping thin or flat lips
