Sculptra is Not Your Average Dermal Filler

Young woman with smooth skin

We age whether we want to or not. We see the signs of aging on our faces whether we’re ready to or not. This is because we cannot dictate to the body when it will stop making collagen and elastin, it does so on its own terms. Sometime during our forties, most of us have at least a few concerns with the way our faces have changed with age. For some, it is the flattening of the cheeks due to volume loss. For some, it is the appearance of jowls on the sides of the jawline, also related to volume loss in the cheek area.

Fortunately, it has gotten easier to address the cosmetic concerns that arise with age. Usually, people turn to dermal fillers to correct them. Some turn to Sculptra. This injectable product is described as a dermal filler, but it works differently. We think this deserves an explanation. Here are a few things you should know about Sculptra.

Sculptra is not like your average dermal filler.

As we mentioned, Sculptra works differently than most dermal fillers. A product like Juvéderm, for example, smooths creases by binding hyaluronic acid particles to water molecules. Sculptra is made of tiny particles of poly-L-lactic acid. This is a biodegradable, biocompatible synthetic polymer from the alpha hydroxy acid family. Where dermal fillers are intended for immediate wrinkle-reduction through volume increase, Sculptra is intended for gradual volume increase through collagen production. A series of 3 to 4 treatments scheduled approximately 6-weeks apart restores the underlying structure of the skin.

Results from Sculptra Can Last Years

When you get Sculptra injections, you will notice an immediate improvement in your appearance. However, these initial improvements don’t last. They are the result of temporary swelling. They are also a preview of what’s to come. As soon as you receive Sculptra injections, your body begins to develop low-level inflammation in the treatment area. This is what brings more collagen in. It takes 4 to 6 weeks for this process to complete, which is why injections are scheduled at 6-week intervals. Once the series is complete and the body continues to make new collagen, the improvements achieved can last more than 2 years. Because Sculptra initiates prolonged collagen production, the results that occur over time look completely natural.
