Treat Spider Veins and Varicose Veins with Sclerotherapy at Westerville Dermatology

Sclerotherapy

What is Sclerotherapy?

For those who desire to treat unsightly spider veins or small varicose veins for smooth, even-toned legs, sclerotherapy is an effective, minimally-invasive spider vein treatment option in Westerville, Ohio.

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a sclerosing solution into the vein, which causes it to scar and forces blood to reroute into healthier veins nearby. Over time, the damaged vein continues to shrink and is absorbed into the surrounding tissue, completely disappearing from the skin.

Sclerotherapy FAQs

Are you interested in learning more about sclerotherapy and how our board-certified dermatologists use it to treat spider veins and varicose veins at Westerville Dermatology? Browse our FAQs section to get a better understanding of this treatment, including how it works and the benefits of sclerotherapy.

Sclerotherapy works by significantly damaging a vein to the point that blood can no longer flow through it, forcing it to reroute to deeper, healthier veins nearby. Afterwards, the vein simply closes up and disappears into the surrounding tissue. The result is less visible spider veins and smoother, more even-toned legs.

While sclerotherapy is primarily used to treat superficial spider veins, it can certainly work as a varicose vein treatment. However, it’s important to know that it may take several sclerotherapy sessions to achieve your desired results, as varicose veins are typically larger than superficial spider veins.

If you have more questions on what type of veins are treated with sclerotherapy, contact one of our friendly dermatologists for more information. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have regarding sclerotherapy!

Sclerotherapy is both permanent and temporary. Veins that successfully respond to sclerotherapy treatment will not reappear, as they are absorbed into the surrounding tissue, but there is always a chance that new spider veins and small varicose veins may develop after treatment.

According to several of our patients who have received sclerotherapy at Westerville Dermatology, it is common to experience mild discomfort during the procedure, as well as a slight stinging sensation and some bruising at the injection site.

Following your sclerotherapy treatment in Westerville, you can expect treated spider veins and small varicose veins to fully heal and disappear within four to eight weeks. For larger varicose veins, treatment recovery will be longer at three to four months.

During your recovery period, we recommend staying out of direct sunlight, wearing compression stockings, and avoiding overexertion and strenuous activity.

One of the primary benefits of sclerotherapy is that this spider vein and varicose vein treatment is minimally invasive, which means you can resume your regular routine and daily activities one to two days after the procedure, depending on the extent of your treatment.

This depends on the severity of your compromised veins. For instance, superficial spider veins may be treated in just one session, whereas larger varicose veins may require three to four sessions in order to see optimal results.

Before your procedure, we recommend consulting with your provider to get a better idea of how many sessions will be needed to achieve your aesthetic goals.

In most cases, no, sclerotherapy is not covered by insurance. Generally, this treatment is used for cosmetic purposes, which is not covered under most insurance plans. However, if you are treating varicose veins for medical reasons, such as immense pain and discomfort, then this procedure may be covered.

Before you schedule a sclerotherapy treatment in Westerville, we recommend consulting with your insurance provider to determine if this procedure is covered under your specific healthcare plan.
